A Vision for the Revelation of Jesus

April 12, 2014

Summary

Peter closes the first public proclamation concerning Jesus in the apostolic era (the period after the ascension of Jesus) with a revelation of the identity of Jesus that serves as the foundation of New Testament Christology and therefore Christianity in general. Like the house of Israel whom Peter was addressing in the immediate context of the sermon, we must know this revelation concerning Jesus with certainty. The formula established here in Acts 2:36 of the Lord Jesus Christ (or similar variant such as “Jesus Christ our Lord”) occurs nearly one-hundred times in the New Testament from this point forward. We must move beyond familiarity and ask, “what does this actually mean?” Why does the New Testament refer to Jesus over and over again in this manner?

Yet before considering the substance of apostolic revelation we must begin by considering the apostolic ambition. Those who had seen Jesus and heard His voice had a holy obsession to know and make known the One they loved. This passion of the apostles will give us the necessary perspective on pursuing their revelation. There is no more breathtaking beauty than the majestic Lord of Glory, and the greatest injustice is for Jesus to remain unknown and disregarded. It is right – it is just – that the splendor of the identity of Jesus be esteemed and adored above all else.

This is the first of three messages spoken on Christ the Lord at the Apostolic Revelation of Jesus conference hosted by the Open Door House of Prayer in Ft. Pierce, FL (April 12-13th, 2014).
